A journey and a destination. Recovery happens here!

The PEERblog

May 2014

The PEER Center joins with other community partners in highlighting May as Mental Health Month. This year’s theme has two objectives: to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and its preventive factors and benefits for mind and body; and to build broad public recognition around the role of mental health to overall health.  Of course, here at The PEER Center, attending to our health and wellness is an everyday, all the time kind of thing. Remember that you are always welcome in this place where recovery happens. Come by for a tour; have a cup of coffee; stay awhile for some fun conversation; get some support; learn some tips and strategies for enriching your recovery journey with others who are walking the path of recovery too!! The mutuality of support is the thing that is unique about The PEER Center.  We believe that wherever we are on the journey, we each have something to learn, something to teach, and something to share. Your experience of recovery enriches our experience of recovery. Come join us!!

April 2014

showers1      The one thing that The P.E.E.R. Center has in common with most other recovery organizations is our emphasis on hope. Hope that our lives will get better, that circumstances will change, that we will heal, that we will learn how to manage and plan our lives in accordance with our own values, that our stories of pain and triumph will ultimately have meaning.  Hope can sometimes be difficult to grasp and hold on to, and that is why sometimes we need a friend; someone who can relate to what we are going through; someone who can remind us that it will get better.  Living life in recovery is much like the changing seasons or the waning and waxing of the moon.  Nothing ever really stays the same. We simply learn how to deal, how to cope, who to lean on, how to ask for help, how to manage. And we learn. The most important thing that we learn is that WE CAN!  We CAN cope. We CAN manage.  And that is worth celebrating ... every time!!!!   During the month of April, it is our hope that you will visit us at The PEER Center, where everyday we are learning about ourselves, sharing our stories of pain and triumph, encouraging and reminding each other that it gets better. It may be raining now, but the flowers will come. That is what it means to hope.   hope stone (1)

During April at our EAST CENTER, we will expand on our employment support activities by co-sponsoring a Job Readiness group on Wednesdays at 11:00amThis group is a collaborative effort with Columbus Area Integrated Health Services, Inc.  Our latest focus on wellness is movement. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon we will take "5 Minutes to Move It!". So if you drop by at noon you might find us literally doing the "Happy Dance".  HIV/STI Testing is scheduled for April 18th and 25th.  Free Vaccines through Project L.O.V.E. is scheduled for April 14th. A Bowling Outing is scheduled for April 16th at 11:30am. Continuing groups include Young Adults Support Group, Music Therapy, AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) Recovery, Relapse prevention, Women and Trauma and Man UP! (Men's Recovery) .

Offerings at our WEST CENTER include HIV/ STI testing, which continues on alternate Tuesdays. Free Vaccines through Project L.O.V.E. will be offered on April 14th.   There will be an outing to COSI  on April 25th at noon.  Some of our ongoing groups include the Veterans Support Group, Anxiety Support, Setting Boundaries, and Coping SkillsOur West Center is now open six full days. Food, Fun and Friendship Saturdays will continue through the month of April.

The Associates Governing Board (AGB) will continue to meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 1pm.  The West Center will host the AGB meeting on the second Tuesday, and the East Center will host the AGB meeting on the fourth Tuesday.  AGB meetings also include Code of conduct review sessions and are only scheduled during these specific dates and times.

March 2014

March brings with it the hope of Spring. This hope is strong here in central Ohio where we are living with a relentless Winter, and snow still in our forecast. This reminds us of what the recovery journey is about.  It is about sustained HOPE in the midst of challenging and difficult times.  Those of us who have longevity on our recovery paths know that bad circumstances eventually turn into good circumstances. February 2014

There is more to the month of February than hearts, flowers and chocolate. Most of us are hoping that the infamous groundhog gives us a sign that Spring is just around the corner. This is also the month that we remember two of our Presidents and their contribution to the history of our nation. Speaking of history, February is “Black History Month” during which we learn of the history making contributions of African Americans.  No matter what day it is, know that The PEER Center is open!  Come by for a tour; have a cup of coffee; stay awhile for some fun conversation; get some support for your recovery journey from others who are on the journey too!! Know that you are always, always welcome here!

January 2014

Cycles and seasons, months and years, days, hours and minutes are how we humans govern our lives. It's how we plan and schedule. It's not only how we mark time; it's how we track progress; it's how we move through recovery, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time. In order to progress through recovery, recovery must first be our goal. We can't look at another person's recovery and use that as a goal or benchmark because recovery looks and feels different for everyone. We have to examine the evidence, evaluate the path, utilize our support network and other trusted advisors as a part of choosing a recovery path. The recovery path is not a straight road. It is almost guaranteed to be long and winding; sometimes hilly; sometimes valley-like. Sometimes we can walk that path alone. Much of the time we need others to walk along side, for company, for conversation, for encouragement, for support. That's not a sign of weakness; it is simply a sign of being human. So fellow humans, welcome to the year 2014. May we all look forward to this new year with hope. May we utilize all resources available to us for support. May we all be successful in our goals for continued wellness. Onward .............

2014-Happy-new-year

Please check out our full months schedule on our calendar links throughout the website.

Informed Gaming will focus on learning the difference between responsible gambling and problem gambling. Art and Recovery will blend arts and crafts with various recovery topics.

Our West Center will be closed on January 1st and January 20th.
Although we are still unpacking and settling in, we are fully operational!! Drop by for a visit!! No appointment needed. Ever.
